like a bird on a wire

It’s pissing me off to an increasing degree…

when people use “natural” as a synonym for “good” or “desirable.” This applies to the whole spectrum of human belief, from fundies to hippies. Incest is natural. Murder and cannibalism likewise. Alfred, Lord Tennyson was entirely right about “nature, red in tooth and claw.” You know what’s unnatural? Modern medicine. Life-saving surgeries. The computer you’re reading this on. Gutenberg’s printing press. Spoken and written language. What little wilderness remains in the world is magnificent and should be preserved, but ain’t nice, it ain’t peaceful, and it ain’t some paradise that corrupted humanity needs to return to. Fuck nature. Hurrah for gross indecency and unnatural acts!
